Apocalyspe Now. [Rachel Ray Cartoons]

Oprah's company, Harpo Productions, apparently is working on an animated series of Satan's spawn, Rachel Ray, as a young "chef".
Now, I'm not sure how I feel about this one, but to be quite honest, an animated version of Rachael might be easier on the eyes. Then again, it'll still be her voice. [Slashfood]
Set to debut in 2009, first she will brainwash your children, then she will eat them. Someone put a stop to this. Now! Kthx.

Mexican Gorditas

Mexico finally gets ahead in the race and is now number two, only behind the U.S. Oh, wait. Number two fattest nation in the world. I guess that's good, right? That means we're well-fed people. In old times extra weight was a sign of affluence and wealth. Now it's just a sign that you can't keep from shoving stuff in your mouth for more than an hour.

I suppose the fact that the terms such as Gordito(a) or Gordis are terms of endearment in Mexico doesn't really help the issue. I remember growing up there how the culture calls for consuming as much Coca-Cola as possible in a day, not to mention the chicharrones with Salsa Valentina, and without forgetting to fry and re-fry everything on the menu for dinner. I'm not one to debate it. I grew up with it. I fucking love it. Like a fat kid loves churros. Oh wait.

"People don't eat right anymore," said Garcia Garduno , mixing a drink of strawberries and pineapple. "Instead of coming here and purchasing a fruit drink, they prefer to walk across the street and buy fried pork chips. That's why so many Mexicans are obese." [Yahoo! News]
I feel that. Nothing like the smell of a pot of Queso Fundido con Chorizo, a fat stack of tortillas to push it in, and a cold Sidral Mundet to wash it down. It's almost as though even Mexicans have adopted the the American phrase "Don't drink the water" and put it to practice. No one in my family drinks water these days. Soda, coffee, beer, liquor, or aguas frescas. La Virgen nos salve de tomar agua.

As in the U.S., Mexicans are living more sedentary lives. Studies show that they're eating more fat and processed foods, and fewer whole grains and vegetables. Foods— healthy and unhealthy— that once were unavailable now can be purchased at new modern supermarkets. In some areas of the country, it's easier to get a soft drink than a clean glass of water. The vast majority of Mexico City's public schools, and many private schools, lack drinkable water, Popkin said. [Yahoo! News]

In any case, way to go Mexico. Let's keep going and try to sink the city back into the lake it was built on.

You may never see me again

In an attempt to beat Apple before it strikes with a similar service, Netflix removes time limit restrictions from their "Watch Instantly" service, which offers pure, unadulterated television. Commercial free at that. (Emphasis mine)
Netflix customers will have unlimited access to a library of 6,000 titles; including episodes of the popular NBC series "Heroes," "The Office" and "30 Rock." [Businessweek]

Emphasis there to chronologically journal my entire day yesterday. Whatever little productivity I had going on after kicking the TV habit is in jeopardy here. Now, the paranoia sets in. I really do think they are out to get me. You know. They.

Ave Maria Purisima, may God be with us all. The end is upon us.

Let's drink to your health!

Yet another article underlines and highlights that really the best answer to all your (health) problems may be inside that daily 12-pack you kill at night. At home. Alone.

People who neither drink nor exercise have a 30 to 49 percent higher risk of heart disease than people who do one or both of the activities, the researchers said in the European Heart Journal. [Yahoo News]
I've basically eradicated all risk of heart disease at this point, and may just start developing a new heart by 2009.

Several major studies have found that light to moderate drinking -- up to two drinks a day on a regular basis -- is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, and some have also found this leads to a lower risk of some cancers. [Yahoo News]
I'm just pretty excited I'm not going to be the first one to go out of my friends. Sorry guys.
People who had the lowest risk of dying from any cause were physically active, moderate drinkers while those at highest risk were the physically inactive, heavy drinkers [?], the study found.[Yahoo News]

Battling heart disease with all my might

Pepsi thinks video games will help Mexican fat kids lose weight, drink more Pepsi

This is almost as retarded as the parents who got Wii's for their kids to improve their physical activity. In a country where the average family can barely afford to live, and a Pepsi is worht about as much as the minimum wage for a days work, how exactly will the kids be able to afford these electronic toys? Will it be by collecting Pepsi bottle caps?

Drink more pepsi, get fat, the collect a toy to help you lose weight!

The company's answer - called Live Healthily - aims to teach a million children in primary schools around the country that they should match the calories they consume with the calories they use up doing exercise.

The centrepiece is a tamagotchi-like computer game in which a child called a nutrin must be guided through everyday decisions about what to buy, what to eat and what sports to play. Periodic visits to the doctor provide health checks. [The Guardian]
If DDR couldn't do it, what hopes does Pepsi have?

Wegman's jumps on the nicotine-free bandwagon...

Wegman's, the cult compund-like, soccer mom zombie-ridden, mega-grocery store, is going smoke free in 2008!!
As of February 10 there will be no more cigarettes, cigars or smokeless tobacco at any of Wegmans 70 stores that stretch across five states.

The company said it, "Respects a person's right to smoke but also understands the destructive role smoking plays in health." [WNEP]
Good thing I quit smoking when I did.

Another one bites the dust...

Ok. So I finally found a spot I like to hang out in, outside of Virginia, that doesn't include a teenage angst ridden environment. Much to my duismay and by strike of luck or Murphy's Law, I cannot go there anymore. At least not without packing and wearing my colors.

...police and DC Fire Department emergency medical personnel responded to an apartment building located at 3500 14th Street, NW to investigate the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they located an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds lying in the vestibule. [DC Gov't]

This all blocks from the Red Derby. I was there only a few hours after, picking fight brawls with the locals. True story.

Spill the Milk!

On the bad milk tip, Boston has issued a warning about "possibly contaminated milk". [Boston.com]

It seems the bacteria is a little more than just popular paranoia.
State health authorities tonight urged consumers not to drink milk produced by Whittier Farms in Shrewsbury after an investigation showed it is the likely source of a bacterial illness that killed two elderly men and made two other people sick.
Innocently enough all these symptoms bear a striking resemblance to my 3-weeks-ago experience.
Symptoms of the disease include fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea or diarrhea. Most people exposed to the bacterium suffer only mild, flu-like symptoms, but the germ can prove deadly to those with underlying medical conditions.
Good thing I treated it when I did. This no more:

I have yet to understand a parent's need to photograph their children in the toilet. Although I was (am?) quite the congenial pooper, no? Heh.
